How a Great Gym Coach Can Help You Make Lasting Lifestyle Changes and Achieve Permanent Healthy Weight Loss.

The Purpose

A great gym coach will help you uncover the real purpose

When a great gym coach asks a prospective client, why they decided to get in touch they generally hear similar responses such as: ‘I want to lose weight’, ‘I want to get fit’ or they want to shape up for an occasion or upcoming holidays. There is nothing wrong with these statements except, they are not ‘reasons why’. They are yet-undefined goals they are hoping to achieve. Understanding the purpose, AKA ‘the why’ behind the decision to act is vital to achieving these goals. Any meaningful fitness journey that is to yield real, lasting results requires a powerful purpose. Having goals without a purpose is like having a destination but no real reason to get there. The journey is meaningless and unexciting.

Detective work

A great gym coach is good at Detective work

An experienced and knowledgeable trainer is a skilled detective who, through series of perceptive questions systematically uncovers the real motivation for taking the first step towards the better life and the real emotional pain points that are no-longer bearable to the client. She or he further determines the circumstances that contributed to client’s current and unacceptable state of health and fitness and discovers any inhibiting factors that prevented that person from acting until now. Let’s break these down, shall we?

The real motivation

An experienced gym coach will help you identify the real motivation

There is always a compelling trigger point that led a person to contacting a gym or a PT and asking for help. This ‘that’s it!’ moment is always loaded with powerful emotions and a realisation of some painful truths. Homing in on this trigger point is a good starting point in identifying the real reasons why. This could be that time when they couldn’t keep up playing football with the kids or when they realised, they have not been taking their kids to the swimming pool because of their own insecurities. These kinds of revelations transform painful realities into unacceptable state of affairs.

Emotional pain points

Whether one or many, the emotional pain points that result from lack of fitness or obesity (often both) can make our lives miserable. We come across a wide range of examples from: ‘I can’t stand looking at myself in the mirror’ to ‘How can I be a role model for my own children like this?’ Sometimes obesity can get in the way of hobbies, passions, relationships, careers… A promise of making these pains go away forever is a potent catalyst for commitment to change. Unfortunately, it is widely underestimated by trainers who don’t dig deep enough or care enough to unearth them.

The circumstances

Uncovering the circumstances and events that lead to weight gain or loss of fitness is the most laborious but the most important part of the entry interview at our gym. This is because there are unlimited contributing factors from boring jobs to traumatic life events and serious injuries. Without understanding these and how they affect the client it is virtually impossible to ensure sustainable change. For sustainable results, the circumstances must change/improve with the client.

Inhibiting factors

Last but not least are the inhibiting factors- everything and anything that can get in the way of progress. They can be the long-working hours, unsupportive partners, mental weakness, addictions and more. Lifestyle change and fitness programmes must take these into consideration. Sometimes, the inhibitors must be removed first before the training.

Great trainers and sustainable change

A great gym coach will help you achieve sustainable change

To conclude, achieving a sustainable lifestyle change and weigh loss is never as simple as a food plan and a fitness programme. There are too many variables that can hinder the results. Great trainers help their clients make adjustments in all relevant areas of their lives and empower them with the knowledge and tools to do it successfully. Invested trainers care enough to ask, to listen, to hear, to understand and to incorporate all the relevant findings into the plan. Next time you decide to join a gym to achieve any goals, seek out the great gym trainers. They stand out a mile. They will ask you a lot of questions about you and your life. You will see them on the gym floor working closely with their clients, correcting their form, cheering them on, having time for them before and after the session. Great trainers invested in You will lead you to sustainable change and lasting results. Moreover, they will empower you with knowledge and tools that will help you maintain them for life. PrimalX Fitness trainers are great gym coaches.
