How To Stay Motivated in January and Beat The 5 dreaded January feelings.

How to stay motivated in January – the month we love to loath. It’s the month of heightened hopes and yet regrets; a month of important decisions and yet reservations; a month of fresh starts and battling of the bad habits; a month of the best intentions and yet the lack of commitment. It’s the time of year that fills us with excitement for the new beginnings to crush us with anxiety of having to go outside of our comfort zone to pursue them.
We know exactly how it feels…

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Here are some of the January emotions many are currently going through that might strike a chord with you.

Feeling fed up with food and drink

Gone is the excitement for festive food and boozy nights with friends and family, replaced with an overwhelming emotion of regret and feeling sick of, well EVERYTHING! Even if you have put an inhumane effort into eating well, drinking responsibly and not overindulging in general over Christmas you still can’t help this feeling. It goes somewhat like that.

Feeling bigger, heavier and unhealthy

Understandably then, many feel like they have piled on weight and their clothes don’t fit as well as they did a month ago. We look in the mirror and the way we feel about ourselves can be described with one disheartening ‘blah’. ‘Is this even me in the mirror?’

The Cabin Fever

If, like many lucky others, you were off during Christmas you might identify with this uncanny feeling of isolation. Confined to the four walls for extensive period might have made you bored and frustrated. You feel like you need to do something but getting dressed and ready to go out feels like an impossible effort.

The fear of going back

Going back to work and interacting with people is a daunting thought. Why do we always have this irrational fear of ‘going back’? Whether it’s going back to work or our daily routine in general, we cannot help but go through that horrid anxiety. Nothing ever really happens to warrant it, and yet the fear is real.

The fear of making New Year’s Resolutions

Last but not least is the fear of the New Year’s resolutions. Have you ever felt really unexcited about making them? Truly dreading the failure more than the status quo. Who hasn’t! This one is a real catch 22. You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t! It’s simply not fair.

So, I think I speak for everyone when I say- to hell with these! Here is what you can do to start your year on a positive note.

As soon as you feel regrets about the food and drink you’ve consumed- STOP. That’s all in the past and there is literally nothing you can do about the past unless you’re Marty McFly.

To counteract it simply make your next meal a healthy one. You will feel instantly better. When you do, just pause for a second and enjoy that refreshingly positive sensation. This will encourage you to make the next meal equally as healthy.

This one easy action and the positive vibes you’ll experience will magically transform the way you perceive yourself and that unpleasant ‘blah’ feeling will simply go away. The more positive mindset will energise you and going back to work will no longer be such an unpleasant prospect. Such is the power of ‘one healthy meal at a time’ rule.

As for the New Year’s resolutions…

I hope I have given you some ideas on how to stay motivated in January, as I have used them in the past and they really did have an impact on me in achieving my fitness and training goals.

Here is a link to an article that might help you stick to them this year. Good luck!
