Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. With no work, no schedule and the festive spirit it feels like you can do what you like and eat what you want. Why? Because as the old excuse goes “Ah sure, it’s Christmas”.

Although Christmas is the most magical time of the year, sadly it’s the most difficult when it comes to controlling the consumption of food and alcohol.  When temptation is there it’s so hard to say no. With that in mind and a few pounds extra in tow, January comes and you’re back in the real world.

Every year the phrase “New Year, New Me” sweeps social media and daily conversations. It’s safe to say that most people will be setting themselves fitness and health goals for the year ahead. But how many will actually stick to their resolutions?

People vow to eat healthy, stay sober, get fit and quit smoking. Some will commit to hitting the gym whilst others will download the app ‘Couch to 5k’ with best intention of using it… So why so many fail?

It’s because it’s easy to set goals, but not many understand how to actually set them, let alone achieve them.

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are our top tips to help you stay on the right path and reach your New Year’s resolutions.



Getting out of that slump

There’s no denying that most people begin the New Year with their best intentions but soon fall off the wagon due to a lazy attitude. Fact! Admitting it is a great place to start. Why? Because now you can decide NOT to be so and do something about it. The only way to get fit, lose weight, or to get healthy is to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Wishful thinking doesn’t work, sadly. So get out of that fitness rut, if you want results. It’s that simple.

As exhausting as it may sound- there are instant rewards. You know that amazing  feeling after a great workout? Or that great feeling after having a healthy meal? They make it all worth it instantly.



Setting achievable goals

Not as easy as it sounds. A generic goal such as losing weight or getting healthy for example is meaningless. They need to be more specific than that. Something you can track and measure over time.

Likewise, setting overly ambitious goals, such as losing a stone in two weeks is unrealistic and will quickly be abandoned.

Setting too many goals at one time is another common mistake.

The secret to setting realistic and achievable goals is COMMON SENSE:

  • focus on one or two goals at a time
  • don’t set your goals too low or too high
  • make your goals specific so you can measure them
  • set a realistic time within which to achieve them.



Knowing what your motivation is

Motivation will drive you and get you through the toughest times on your fitness journey.

This is why it is so important to establish WHY you’re doing what you set out to do. So when things get tough, having purpose will go a really long way.

‘I do this because I want to tone up’ simply won’t do.  Completing a half marathon or an Ironman challenge is a better one.  Wanting to be a role model to your children is even better. Showing them how to keep fit, how to eat healthy to avoid diseases is a worthy purpose.  

Knowing why, empowers you in everything you do.




Whatever you do, don’t plan for a year ahead. Long-term goals are good to keep in mind but they can be waaaayyy too high. Focus on the smaller weekly goals that are so much more achievable and satisfying, and each will get you closer to your long-term goal. This will make each workout and each healthy meal so much more doable.

Reaching short-term goals in succession will spur you on and will make you eager to try harder for the next. Achieving the long-term goal will almost be like a side effect.

ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME will get you there.



Taking responsibility for your results

Above all, take responsibility for everything you do or don’t do. Your results are nobody else’s responsibility but your own.  Once you accept that, you will be in full control of your journey.

BE ACCOUNTABLE- it’s much more rewarding than it sounds.



Being honest with yourself

Being completely honest with yourself is the only way to succeed. If you skipped a class because you were not in the mood, or had way too much chocolate to comfort yourself over the weekend- that’s ok. Who doesn’t?

Acknowledge it, accept it, and make adjustments to keep on track going forward.

If you don’t, then you will blame lack of results on the food plan you are on or  your training when in fact it’s series of your own slip ups. And that’s ok, we all have them- just get back on track with your next meal and training session.

You’re worth it

Taking the best care of yourself is the most rewarding thing you can do for your body.

We understand that getting into a fitness routine or making it a habit takes practice. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit and six months for it to become part of your life. Just forget about quick fixes if you want to get sustainable results.

Healthy lifestyle takes discipline, character and commitment, but good news is- we are all capable of it. Anyone can do it.

So invest in yourself- the time, the money, the effort- you are worth it!

We spend a fortune on clothes, cosmetics, slimming tablets, nights out, holidays, technology, cars, hobbies but we don’t value ourselves and our bodies enough to invest in our health….

Put yourself first- there simply is nothing more worthy investing money in than your own life and health.

If you don’t think you can do it on your own just join a gym that offers tailored programs and coaching to ensure you get your goals. It’s their job to guide you and help you get results. Results don’t happen overnight but they do happen. With honesty, commitment to yourself, and discipline to keep going YOU CAN ACHIEVE UNBELIEVABLE THINGS. Anything you want really.

The fear of going back

Going back to work and interacting with people is a daunting thought. Why do we always have this irrational fear of ‘going back’?
